Theory/Hazard Perception

Hazard Perception

The Hazard perception element in the driving test was introduced in 2002 as one of the measures that will help new drivers to receive the appropriate training in scanning the road and identifing potentially dangerous situations and then making a driving plan on how to reduce the risk.

Drivers who have undertaken this training have much better hazard perception skills ,the ability to recognise the available clues and the early perception of dangers are skills that are every driver needs on todays roads.

The hazard perception part of your test will be taken on a computer and you will respond to the developing hazards by clicking a button on your mouse. You will be shown a total of 14 clips which will feature everyday road scenes which will contain at least 1 developing hazard ,1 clip will contain 2 developing hazards.

The sooner you respond to the developing hazard the higher you will score, the maximum you can score for each hazard is 5.If you responded throughout the developing hazard and score different points you will always score the highest number of points,as an example if you scored 5 and then scored 2 you will received the highest score which in this example would be 5.

You will not be able to review the clips just like on the road you will only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard,so its very important that you keep on concentrating throughout all the clips.

If you click continuously or in a pattern of responses you will score zero for that clip at the end of the clip you will be informed that you have clicked inappropriately and scored zero for that clip.
